Since 2003, GBH has presented A Christmas Celtic Sojourn as a gathering to celebrate on stage during this darkest time of the year. Each December, the show has drawn on Celtic, Pagan, and Christian traditions to celebrate the season. In 2020, as with so many long-established traditions around the world, we were unable to gather in the usual way due to the pandemic. Undaunted, and with creative thinking and a lot of hard work from artists and creative staff, we produced what we felt was a very satisfying streaming virtual. It was enjoyed by nearly 7,000 households, many of whom told us they gathered virtually with friends and family to watch in real-time. We were so encouraged by the feedback that we have decided to keep a virtual element each year going forward.

In 2021, A Christmas Celtic Sojourn will be both live on-stage and virtual for you to enjoy. Our goal is to be there for you again this holiday season as we reemerge. We will sing together our familiar songs, and as always, introduce new traditional material.

Live performances this year are limited, so tickets will be at a premium. We will open on December 14th with two shows at the Shalin Liu Performance Center in Rockport followed by just five shows at the Cutler Majestic Theatre on the weekend of December 17, 18, and 19.

Tickets for our Virtual edition will go on sale shortly. The Virtual edition will be a livestream of our on-stage performance. This will allow you to bring us into your homes to share with friends and family, and not just the performances and warmth of music and song and story-telling, but the magnificence of the Cutler Majestic Theatre in Boston.  Bundled tickets are available, which will allow you to attend a performance at the Cutler Majestic in those gorgeous seats, and then share the performance with friends and family or re-live it yourself during the holidays. Bundled tickets can be purchased through the Cutler Majestic box office (click the Cutler Majestic link above for more details).

We feel this year will be extra special. Thanks for your support of it.

Welcome to A Christmas Celtic Sojourn

Brian O’Donovan’s A Celtic Sojourn has entertained and enlightened audiences since 1986 as part of his 3-hour weekly radio program on WGBH radio. Now celebrating nearly two decades of holiday performances, the Christmas-time live version of the show draws on Celtic, Pagan, and Christian traditions to celebrate the music of the season. A Christmas Celtic Sojourn reflects the compelling and diverse offerings of the weekly national radio program plus the excitement of a live show featuring the Celtic world’s best performers. The 2021 iteration of the show promises once again to be one of the chestnuts of the region’s Christmas offerings.

What’s Different This Year

Again, and to be clear as things are still far from normal:  2021’s A Christmas Celtic Sojourn will be a mixture of both live performances, and a streaming Virtual show. Our live shows are being scaled back to the Shalin Liu in Rockport, and the Cutler Majestic Theatre in downtown Boston. Rockport will be on December 14th and our five Cutler performances will take place December 17th, 18th, and 19th.  These performances will be full capacity and we anticipate that proof of vaccination will be required.  Your safety is our number one priority.  We will be following CDC, State and Local guidelines throughout.

Our Virtual Show this year will be a highly produced stream of the live performance from The Cutler Majestic Theatre in downtown Boston.
